I am not sure weather I ever mentioned this but when I was little I wanted to be an evil genius scientist (like in TV shows) when I grew up for some simple reasons: 1. they always had awesome hideouts generally on some remote private island 2. they always seemed to have money 3. they got to play with really cool stuff all day and build things 4. they had always escaped prison by the start of the next episode 5. They got to wear a lab coat!
It all sounded like a dream job until someone came along and told me that evil genius scientist was not a viable career path….
Science then I got as close as I could to be honest which means that I became a scientist though without a private island or a lab coat for that matter. I love studying astronomy though when you think about it you imagine it to involve a lot of staring into a telescope late at night and looking at merging galaxies and supernovae. In reality we spend a whole lot of time in an office in front of a laptop analyzing pictures that show nothing but white spots randomly dotted across. Astronomer was the last scientific job I wanted to do when I was little because space was big and freakishly scary.
What I actually wanted to talk about was what is coming next for me. While you guys are about to start university I am finishing my undergraduate degree. I mentioned in recent blog that I am a sucker for a good plan and that without one I tend to feel a bit lost. What i know is that I want to continue studying astronomy and get my Masters and have already received offers for me to do so (though I have yet to make a final decision). From there on things get a bit fuzzy …. if I get the chance I would continue on to my Phd and then take up a post in a research-group preferable at a university so I could teach a bit on the side. All in all this is going to take me a minimum of 5 years probably quite a bit longer then that depending where you go and how things pan out. plans never work the way you want them to anyway so I haven’t really thought much further then that or specified exactly where I want to be. In the end it isn’t important where the masters course is or where I would get to do my Phd as long as I got to do it (though a couple of places with cool research topics spring to mind).
As another option there would be working for the European Space Agency though I have to confess I don’t know all that much about what exactly I would be working there as…..
So all in all from my dream job as a kid only the scientist bit is left over and that is probably for the best (would love a lab coat though). Although it has its up and downs I don’t think that there is anything else I would rather be doing! And to keep it short the plan for the next couple of years is going to be more studying ( and maybe never leave the world of academia) and then hopefully be able to do some (ground breaking ??) research.
I am not sure whether any of the topics I am interested in are going to say much to you but just so you get the idea my dissertation topic was ‘Photometry of magnetic cataclysmic variables’ … That says it all doesn’t it 🙂
I wish I had something more concrete to tell you like exactly where I am going and the likes but to my great annoyance I haven’t been able to make that plan yet because I am still waiting for the answer from a uni that offers a spectacular course.
Well and also we are only getting our results one minute past midnight which is really soon !! Until then not much I can do apart from constantly refreshing the results page.
Wish me luck !!
