I know this week I came up with one hell of a weird title but I wanted to tell you about the end of an era. I am graduating this summer and I am not really looking forward to it because I remember all the good times I had with my course. The name the fighting mongooses was the team name of a chemistry work-group though I wish it would have been us because it is one awesome team name.
It has to be admitted that there are one or two people in my year group that even though we attended all the same lectures I have never really spoken to. Still they have been a funny bunch and I am stuck with lots of fun memories of spending hours discussing the merits of revising at Barry Island, spending an entire day cooped up in our astronomy study room to work on hour dissertations but actually ending up fixing up an old stereo so we could listen to it while we ‘work’. I remember almost everyone in out course going for a coffee break one terrible Monday morning when we learned about the silica content of lava.
We had our fair share of conflicts in our course partially because we used to be such a young course and we still were the lab rats and now they are changing everything over and adding some fantastic modules and we have to go an graduate. Some of us contemplated failing so we could take our pick of the new modules ourselves.
One of my favorite memories will probably be trying to mime polarized light during my viva because I couldn’t think of the words.
All these amazing memories make up for all the lectures that just dragged on forever and all the late nights spend in front of a computer.
I am in no way ready to be leaving academia and I am incredibly jealous of you guys who just get to start out!
