Hi everyone, this week I decided to talk to you about clearing as it is starting quite soon. Loads of people have probably talked to you about it already but I thought it might be a good idea to write about my own experience with it.
“You may not realise it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.” – Walt Disney
And I think this quote really says it all… Clearing is not a pleasant thing it really isn’t. I remember being completely distraught at not making it into my first and second choice unis. But in the end I think I am glad that I did go trough clearing, as uncomfortable as it was calling up unis and asking whether they could offer me a place…
Both Paige and Rhys have talked about all the reasons why going to university is this amazing chance and experience, and I completely agree with them. And clearing can help you with just that.
Also it lets you rethink whether the courses you applied for are really what you want to do. I mean you applied absolutely ages beforehand, and maybe the amazing subject you wanted to study has now lost its charm. It might be well worth rethinking your choice of course and having a look what else there is on offer. If you are going through all the courses offered alphabetically make sure you check all letters. My course for example was not with any of the other physics or astronomy courses but under ‘O’ for Observational Astronomy. It all makes sense if you know what you are looking for I guess.
Or maybe call up the universities of your choice and ask whether they have a foundation year program you could enter.
It all worked out for me and I am glad I went through with it.
I just finished my second year of Observational Astronomy and I absolutely love it. And although this is not the straight physics course that I originally thought I wanted, I believe that I have never made a better decision in my life ^.^
Having to go through clearing may initially feel like being kicked in the teeth but don’t overlook what it has to offer for you. Make sure to think about all your options going through clearing or taking a year out to travel and then reapply are only some of them. And if you are set on going through clearing hang in there and make sure to look at all the courses that are on offer. There might be some that interest you very much but had not yet considered.
So to all of you having to go through clearing good luck !!
And tune in for next weeks exciting episode of “Just how fun is Astronomy”
